Ripton’ing through the Ride!

Ripton’ing through the Ride!

Stage 4 is complete!

The team arrived in Abbots Ripton at just after 9am which put them well ahead of schedule and allowed for a little bit longer to rest!

Having refuelled at the local post office, where both the Postmistress and another customer kindly donated £20 each, they headed back out on the road again at around 9.30 for the 5th Leg!

In other news I have successfully made it to London on what was one of the better trains I’ve had the privilege of riding on, although if you’ve ever had the fortune to visit the Jorvik Centre in York you will likely be familiar with the smell that inhabited the rail car I spent the journey in.

Anyway, let’s take a little look at…

Abbots Ripton

Another village listed in the Doomsday Book under the name ‘Riptune’ (which I personally prefer), Abbots Ripton occupies roughly 4080 acres of land in Huntingdonshire.

It’s rather unusual name comes from the combination of the Saxon Rip (a strip of land) and Tun (a farm or homestead). The prefix ‘Abbots’ came from the fact the area was owned by the Abbot of Ramsey and was added largely to distinguish it from Kings Ripton which was under royal ownership.

Although it is spread across a vast amount of land, the population of the area has never climbed above 408 individuals, and during the last census in 2011 there were a total of 305 people living there, equalling 47.9 people per square mile!

I’m guessing noisy neighbours aren’t an issue there!

That’s about all I can find too, there is a pub, a shop and of course the aforementioned Post Office.

Video Footage

Given that wasn’t a particularly long update I thought I’d take this opportunity to share with you a few of the videos from the Ride!

I would have done this sooner but the wifi on the train blocked YouTube for some reason.
